The traditional architecture of the Asante Kingdom, once one of the most powerful states on the African continent, today survives only in the form of a handful of shrine complexes near Kumasi, Ghana, the empire’s former capital. Decorated with richly symbolic bas reliefs, these earthen buildings are threatened by the disruption of traditional cycles of maintenance as the number of worshipers declines.
