ASANTE TRADITIONAL BUILDINGS

The traditional architecture of the Asante Kingdom, once one of the most powerful states on the African continent, today survives only in the form of a handful of shrine complexes near Kumasi, Ghana, the empire’s former capital. Decorated with richly symbolic bas reliefs, these earthen buildings are threatened by the disruption of traditional cycles of maintenance as the number of worshipers declines.

Explore the history of Asante shrine architecture and the conservation challenges these buildings face today.

Learn about the layered meaning of the adinkra symbols often featured on the walls of Asante shrines, as well as how these symbols have been incorporated into modern architecture both in Ghana and in the diaspora.

These exhibits are part of a larger collection devoted to Black heritage sites entitled The Black Atlantic.
