Fortifications and World Heritage: Challenges in Interpretation and Site Management

The Madhya Pradesh Cultural Heritage Project was highlighted as part of an international conference and exhibition on military heritage in New Delhi on February 5 and 6th, 2015. Entitled “Fortifications and World Heritage: Challenges in Interpretation and Site Management,” the conference was jointly hosted by ICOMOS-India NSC, ICOFORT, the School of Planning and Architecture in Bhopal, and UNESCO New Delhi. Conservation architects working on nine forts and fortifications in Orchha, a key focus area of the collaboration between World Monuments Fund and the government of Madhya Pradesh, participated in the conference and their work was included in the accompanying exhibit Forts of India. Experts also shared papers and contributed to technical sessions that included “Classifying Fortified Heritage in the Indian Subcontinent,” “Conservation and Management Challenges in Forts,” “Interpretation and Tourism Challenges in Forts,” and “ICOFORT Charter and Learnings from International Case Studies.”
